Cartier Suing ‘Flash Retailer’ HauteLook

Cartier is suing ‘flash retailer’ HauteLook, citing “immediate and irreparable harm to the Cartier brand and trademark.”

Flash Retailers offload designer goods in private sales at heavily discounted prices. Lasting often just a couple of days, these sales include items such as overstock and samples.

Cartier argues HauteLook has been selling some of its damaged and second-hand merchandise without permission, thereby damaging the Cartier name. Specifically, the brand claim the retailer has sold some of its used watches despite the retailer stipulating on its website that it “never” sells “secondhand merchandise, ever.”

It also said HauteLook has sold Cartier goods that were damaged, shipped in the wrong packaging, carried defaced authenticity certificates, and sometimes included a Cartier warranty booklet though the warranty did not apply.

Cartier’s stated intention is to protect clients from misleading online sales practices as well as to protect “the trusted Cartier name and what it stands for.” Meanwhile HauteLook said: “HauteLook respects intellectual property right holders and is taking this matter very seriously.”

Zenith Elite Captain Watch

Ahoy captain! Why I needed to begin with that cheesy, cliche phrase I do not know.. but Zenith calls the watch the “Elite Captain,” which sounds just as cheesy. The “Elite” part of the name comes from the collection - which is a mid range of models from the ‘reinvented’ luxury brand. I believe that most Elite watches have in-house made Zenith movements. At least the Elite Captain does. Zenith has been offering watches with in-house made calibers at prices that are comparatively very reasonable - starting in the $5k - $6k range I believe. Not sure about the price of the Elite Captain, but with its relatively simple three-hand date automatic Caliber Elite 670 movement, it shouldn’t be too much.
In steel or gold, the Elite captain comes in a few versions. Each in a 40mm wide case with various dial colors. The model here with its swanky looking metal bracelet and sharp dial is my favorite. It is a very handsome watch in a classic sense, quite the direction that Zenith is trying to take. Enough watches like this and they just may succeed. Looking at it again, it is starting to feel like a solid alternative to a basic Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch. What do you think? Look for the new Elite Captain watch soon.

A. Lange & Söhne park

The unveiling of a monument to Ferdinand A. Lange by 15 apprentices of the company’s own watchmaker school was the highlight of a ceremony at which Lange Uhren GmbH inaugurated the A. Lange & Söhne Park in Glashütte on 15 July. With this, the company pays tribute to the founder of Germany’s fine watchmaking industry, who opened the first watchmaker workshop in the region in 1845 with 15 apprentices.

Also among the more than one hundred guests was his great grandson Walter Lange, who has carried on the family tradition since reunification, as well as the Vice President of the Saxon State Parliament, Andrea Dombois. In her word of welcome she honoured the social involvement of the company which is expressed in so many ways, even beyond the creation of highly qualified jobs. A current example is the tourist guide system for Glashütte, recently initiated by Lange, which guides visitors to the sights of the city.

The more than 3,000 square metre park was designed by the landscape architects Michael Wolf and Dirk Radzanowski from Penig in Saxony, and built by the company Grünkonzept from Bannewitz near Dresden. The bronze bust of Ferdinand A. Lange is the work of the Swiss sculptor, Beat Künzler. A musical setting at the ceremony was provided by the American mezzo-soprano Emily Righter and the Italian baritone Andrè Schuen. Both are stipendiaries of the “Young Singers Project” of the Salzburg Festival, with which the company maintains a close partnership.

 A. Lange & Söhne is opening the doors to its manufactory and inviting the public to get acquainted with precision watchmaking in many different ways. The planned ascents in a tethered balloon are likely to be very popular: they offer a totally new outlook on Glashütte as a hub of horology.

The Charity News from Franck Mulle Website

Our goal is to implement a holistic, cost-effective, replicable and sustainable program by linking community health workers through a cell phone network using mhealth applications; this will allow the collection of data in real time and enable delivery of care in the field and the performance of procedures at the renovated HC lV facility.

the Maternal Health Task Force (MHTF) and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) are pleased to announce the Global Maternal Health Conference 2010. Together, MHTF and PHFI will convene an unprecedented gathering of approximately 500 maternal health experts and their allies in a global technical and programmatic meeting focused exclusively on maternal health

The Global Maternal Health Conference 2010 aims to build on the existing momentum around MDG5 to coalesce and catalyze the maternal health field.  Lessons learned, neglected issues, and innovative thinking will be the underpinnings of the conference, and the anticipated outcome is increased consensus around the evidence, programs and advocacy needed to improve maternal health.

We have designed a holistic strategy to address maternal/neonatal/child mortality that will be used as a model by the Ministry of Health. Our initial project on the ground will take place in the Mityana district of Uganda.  Specifically the Busujju sub-county which has an approximate population of 85,000 and is equally divided between male and fema. LFM’s first project will be implemented in rural Uganda this year using this holistic strategy

Watch — A lmost dreamlike works of art ?

What art should be like? And which things can be connected with art?Should watch can said to be art? Let us see one person about art .

The inspiration for the 2011 Resort Collection comes from the work of painter Mark Rothko, who used color to communicate emotion and passion. The formal shapes in his work are blocks of color — mesmerizing in their depth and complexity… and sensuous in their rounded, wispy edges… and powerful in their delicate balance with each other. In exacting detail, he created almost dreamlike works of art, layering colors as if they were heartfelt feelings blended together right on the canvas. It’s no wonder he once wrote that “art to me is an anecdote of the spirit.”

Rothko once wrote that “shapes have no direct association with any particular visible experience,” but he knew that shapes had powerful emotional impact. In fact, he called them “performers.” And in his paintings he said that these performers were creating “an unknown adventure in an unknown space.” Rothko believed that art must be experienced. So open your heart to the sublime richness of your own spirit. Blend colors and shapes to create your own unique presence, let your “performers” express the story of your life, and let the world experience the work of art that is you.

All of us are on an unknown adventure, pursuing it everyday we step out into that great “unknown space” we call the world. With the power of our spirit, we each create our own space — one with depth and balance and even luminosity. And we invite others into that space, to experience it in a way that Rothko described as “not grandiose… [but] intimate and human.”

Now ,What do you think? The art,The color,The person ,The watch? Just think by yourself.

OMEGA and the 35th Anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project Mission

Legendary U.S. astronauts Lt. General Thomas Stafford and Vance Brand, and Russian cosmonaut Valery Kubasov, made a special appearance at the OMEGA Flagship Boutique on Fifth Avenue in New York City on Thursday, July 15th in celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission.

The 35th anniversary of this historic handshake in space is commemorated with the release of the OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz “35th Anniversary” chronograph in a limited edition of 1,975 watches, featuring a meteorite dial and engraved case back.

The astronauts and cosmonauts signed and donated 10 limited edition OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz “35th Anniversary” chronograph boxes to commemorate the mission’s historic anniversary and participated in a special forum discussion, moderated by space expert Miles O’Brien, sharing their memories of their famous mission and landmark “handshake in space.”

“I am proud to be here at the OMEGA Flagship Boutique today in New York City today with my fellow astronauts and cosmonauts in celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the historic Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission,” said Lt. General Stafford.  “Our OMEGA Speedmaster Professional timepieces played an important role during the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission and we are excited that OMEGA has commemorated this anniversary with the limited edition OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Apollo-Soyuz ‘35th Anniversary’ chronograph.”

OMEGA is defined by its pioneering spirit.  The brand has participated in some of the most challenging and fascinating adventures in human history, including the conquest of space, including all six lunar landings, the first divers watch in 1932, world-class sports timekeeping, including 24 Olympic games, and an airplane designed to fly around the Earth on solar power.  The OMEGA Speedmaster is still the official chronograph of every NASA flight.

On July 17, 1975, Lt. General Stafford (USA) and General Leonov (USSR) met in the docking hatch which linked their respective aircrafts.  On the wrists of the three astronauts and two cosmonauts involved in the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission was the OMEGA Speedmaster; once docked, Commanders Stafford and Leonov emerged and used their synchronized Speedmasters to time a historic rendezvous through the open hatch of Soyuz.  The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project mission marked the first time that spacecraft built by different nations had docked and signaled an era of cooperation in space; it also marked the end of an era as the final flight of the Apollo spacecraft.

The Casio G-Shock DW 9000 - French Marine Nationale Standard Issue For Only $250

While some of the team is off in Tokyo, us stateside thought it would be nice to pay tribute to one of the meanest watches to come out of Japan, the Casio G-Shock DW 9000.

The DW 9000 was given to five commando units of the French Marine Nationale in the 1990s (side note – tune in later today for some US Navy SEAL watch action, complete with huge guns!).   The DW 9000 is no longer made by Casio, and their replacement, the DW 6600, is no longer marked with the military issue number or homebase.

Luckily for you, we found an original French Marine Nationale issue Casio G Shock DW 9000 for sale on good ole TimeZone.  This particular watch was issued in 1998 at Lorient, and was the 85th watch out of the 150 distributed that year.  This is indicated by the “L-98/85” engraved into the case back.

The seller is asking $250 for this Casio, which may seem like a lot for a used digital watch, but you know what, where else are you going to find a real military issue watch for this kind of money?  You’re just not, simple as all

Omega News about Solar Impulse completes successful Night Flight

All through the night. When the Solar Impulse prototype airplane touched down at the airfield in Payerne, Switzerland on the morning of July 8th, 2010, it had already made history, having flown all night long powered only by the energy collected in its solar cells the day before. That morning, the sun, which played such a key role, rose on a new era in aviation.

Stephen Urquhart, president of OMEGA, spoke enthusiastically about the critical phase in the mission. “With this first night flight the Solar Impulse project has reached an important milestone. It’s clear that the ground-breaking technology is working perfectly. It is also a significant step which will convince many people that the ambitious aim of circling the globe in an airplane, flying day and night and powered only by the sun, will be a reality in the near future. It’s an exciting time and OMEGA is proud to be part of this adventure.”
Solar Impulse has an ambitious goal: the project aims to circle the globe powered entirely by solar energy. It will prove convincingly that there are viable sustainable energy sources which will allow us to reduce our dependency on non-renewable fossil fuels.
OMEGA and Solar Impulse

OMEGA is proud of the contributions it has made to this pioneering adventure and congratulates its Solar Impulse partners for this important next step.

OMEGA’s participation has involved capital and technological support. In 2007, the company developed a performance simulation and testing system (test bench) which enabled the SI development team to simulate the airplane’s electrical systems. The project also benefits from the OMEGA instrument, an easy-to-read device which displays important parameters to assist the pilot during landing. It was developed by astronaut and Swatch Group Board Member Claude Nicollier. OMEGA’s engineers have been able to transfer knowledge of hybrid propulsion systems gained through the development of the Swatchmobile in the 1990s.

An ultra-lightweight landing light system

Most recently, OMEGA’s specialists contributed a powerful landing light system for the Solar Impulse prototype. They were given an interesting challenge: the Solar Impulse project team said that the entire landing light system could not weigh more than 2 kg!

The OMEGA team managed to create a system which delivers an astonishing watts per weight ratio. On each wing is a set of LED landing lights whose brightness is amplified by a correlation lens. Additional sets of “promotional” lights are positioned along each wing. The lights are all protected by very strong windows which are made from the same resilient plastic used in Swatch watches. Altogether, the landing and promotional lights, their windows, the power transformer and connectors and the wiring weigh about 1.998 kilograms.

As a result, the Solar Impulse’s runway is illuminated, the pilot’s safety is enhanced and the promotional lights create an impressive aesthetic effect – all in a package weighing less than two kilograms.

One of the great classic features of the Reverso line is that the case is reversible. This gives way to the possibility of providing two displays of time on front and back. In the Reverso Grande Duodate 986 the silvered front dial shows the time in the reference time zone, completed with the small seconds display at 6 o’clock a subtle rounded date display arching across the top of the minute-track rectangle with its ‘stretched’ Clous de Paris hobnail pattern standing out against the surrounding vertical guilloché area.
